MTN to construct West Africa’s largest data center

MTN Nigeria recently announced the construction of its largest West African data center, featuring 1,500 racks and Tier 4 specifications.

Industry reports highlight that the Tier 4 data center is engineered to be fully fault-tolerant, with redundancy for every component, and boasts an expected uptime of 99.995%. This ensures it can withstand a wide range of potential disruptions, providing the most reliable infrastructure available.

MTN’s Chief Technical Officer, Mr. Mohammed Rufai, explained that this project aims to bolster Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. He emphasized that the data center would play a crucial role in meeting the increasing data demands and digital needs of businesses and consumers nationwide. The new facility will support MTN’s infrastructure and serve as a vital resource for businesses across Nigeria.

“Businesses needing data center capacity can now avoid maintaining their server rooms,” Rufai said. “Our facility will provide the necessary space and services, enabling companies to digitize their operations and improve efficiency. The data center will also enhance content delivery from major tech companies like Meta and Google, bringing content closer to Nigerian users and improving access speeds.”

This local content hosting is expected to significantly boost user experience and network efficiency. Rufai highlighted the critical need for expanded data processing capabilities driven by substantial growth in data usage and the emergence of new services. “We see a high demand in the market, with data usage growing significantly. To cater to this demand and prepare for future growth, MTN is expanding and modernizing its data center capacity,” he said.

Rufai described the project as a technological investment and a catalyst for economic growth. By providing scalable and adaptable infrastructure, the data center will enable businesses, particularly Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), to leverage cloud services and other digital solutions, driving innovation, efficiency, and competitiveness across various economic sectors.

He emphasized MTN’s readiness to partner with startups and MSMEs, offering numerous opportunities for collaboration, particularly in cloud services. The data center aligns with MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy, underscoring the company’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals. The facility will eventually use efficient cooling systems and a combination of traditional, gas, and renewable energy sources, significantly reducing its carbon footprint.

Rufai noted that up to 60% of a typical data center’s power consumption in the region is for cooling. MTN’s highly efficient systems will ensure the sustainability targets are met.
