Data centers consume vast amounts of resources, from hardware to water and electricity to provide the maximum uptime to the end user, but changes in consumer attitude regarding equipment life-cycle practices are seeing operators increasingly adopt more circular economy initiatives. Renewable Power, heat re-use, refresh servers and refurbished hardware are enabling the reduction of a data centers carbon footprint whilst driving efficiency gains. Digital Infra Network looks at how these initiatives are being implemented to achieve sustainability targets in the industry.

IT plays an important role in the transition from the linear to the circular economy. Many developments are currently leading to new emerging circular sustainable ecosystems. The interdependency on other external organizations gives rise to the need for control of relevant data. Local power supply and distribution problems become more apparent due to local wind and solar farms. Data Centres are operating on both the IT- and energy-axis and can play a central role in facilitating the local circular transformation. Hence, we need to look at Combined Energy & Compute in local ecosystems and tie them together in a sustainable meshed (edge) computing topology.
