Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are gaining momentum in the data center industry for their emission-free operation, back-up power capabilities, ability to optimize renewable energy generation and participation in new ancillary services. In ABB session we are focusing on BESS within a microgrid-enabled data center and how it can support a more sustainable backup power and allows to be in charge of the energy mix, from Hyperscale to Enterprise customer.

Data centre back-up power takes its place alongside the energy challenges the data centre sector faces – grid power is increasingly constrained, connections are subject to significant caveats and fossil-fuel back-up can only expect a limited lifespan. The future is proximity to sources of large-scale renewable energy, alternative fuels and alternative energy storage solutions, on-site generation to support grid networks and battery arrays charged with surplus renewable energy. The vision and plans for Echelon’s DUB20 site in Ireland (seen as exemplar by the grid operator) provide examples of what can be achieved.
