Dirty data or clicking clean?: Defining a meaningful response to climate change by data center operators for 2030
Recognizing the power demands of data centers was dramatically increasing the demand for dirty energy around the world, in 2010 Greenpeace launched its challenge to the IT sector to power its digital infrastructure with 100% renewable energy. While many companies have responded to the challenge by making long term commitments to renewables and adding significant new deployments of renewable energy to the grid, the sector's rapid growth continues to drive a dramatic rise in greenhouse gas emissions as it continues to fuel demand for fossil fuels. Given the growing urgency of climate change and the projected explosive growth in our digital infrastructure, what must a meaningful response from data center operators look like over the next 10 years.
